Environmental Sound Recognition: A Statistical Approach

چکیده

Introduction Noise pollution has become an important problem in our society. Noise assessment regulations require the measurement and evaluation of noise. The basic equipment for this measurement is the noise monitoring systems (or NMS). The current generation of NMS consists of "dumb" systems that record noise level and, possibly, noise spectra, over programmed periods of time. The interpretation of the recordings is left to a human expert acting "off-line." The goal of our research is to develop the tools necessary to build an "intelligent" NMS able to identify automatically the nature of the sources of the noise events in addition to recording their acoustic characteristics (Figure 1).

Statistical sound source identification in a real acoustic environment for robust speech recognition using a microphone array

It is very important for a hands-free speech interface to capture distant talking speech with high quality. A microphone array is an ideal candidate for this purpose. However, this approach requires localizing the target talker. Conventional talker localization methods in multiple sound source environments not only have difficulty localizing the multiple sound sources accurately, but also have ...

Selective deficits in human audition: evidence from lesion studies

The human auditory cortex is the gateway to the most powerful and complex communication systems and yet relatively little is known about its functional organization as compared to the visual system. Several lines of evidence, predominantly from recent studies, indicate that sound recognition and sound localization are processed in two at least partially independent networks. Evidence from human...

Multiclass Support Vector Machines for Environmental Sounds Recognition with Reassignment Method and Log-Gabor Filters

We present a robust environmental sound classification approach, based on reassignment method and logGabor filters. In this approach the reassigned spectrogram is passed through a bank of 12 log-Gabor filter concatenation applied to three spectrogram patches, and the outputs are averaged and underwent an optimal feature selection procedure based on a mutual information criterion. The proposed m...

Sound-Imitation Word Recognition for Environmental Sounds Disambiguation in Determining Phonemes of Sound-Imitation Words

Environmental sounds are very helpful in understanding environmental situations and in telling the approach of danger, and sound-imitation words (sound-related onomatopoeia) are important expressions to inform such sounds in human communication, especially in Japanese language. In this paper, we design a method to recognize sound-imitation words (SIWs) for environmental sounds. Critical issues ...

A New Statistical Approach for Recognizing and Classifying Patterns of Control Charts (RESEARCH NOTE)

Control chart pattern (CCP) recognition techniques are widely used to identify the potential process problems in modern industries. Recently, artificial neural network (ANN) –based techniques are very popular to recognize CCPs. However, finding the suitable architecture of an ANN-based CCP recognizer and its training process are time consuming and tedious. In addition, because of the black box ...
